Instead of asking, we are giving: The Perth charity doing it differently

Children’s Leukemia and Cancer Research Foundation is celebrating its 40th year this May.

Head of Development Kylie Dalton says the organisation had planned a campaign to raise $40 thousand in 40 days. But due to the economic climate decided to shine a spotlight on their supporters instead.

40 Days of Kindness

The Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer Research Foundation (CLCRF) has reached an impressive milestone, celebrating its 40th anniversary tomorrow, May 21, 2020. To mark this auspicious occasion, the Foundation is launching the 40K in 40 days initiative, having connected with 40 very generous businesses to provide gifts to those most deserving.

Each gift, valued from $500 up to $5000, and its associated business, will be showcased on one of the 40 days of the campaign (from May 21 – June 30) across various social media channels and listed on the campaign website. People are encouraged to head to 40kin40days.com.au and nominate someone they think is worthy to receive a particular gift, thus creating a circle of kindness.

Whilst the 40Kin40days initiative was originally planned to be a fundraising campaign for the Foundation – obviously in the current climate this had to change, with the charity pivoting to have the K now stand for Kindness and pay it forward to their supporters instead.

“As you can imagine, we’ve had to make a lot of changes with our celebratory year because of what is happening around the world, including making the hard decision to cancel all pre-planned campaigns and celebrations, as it just didn’t seem right to ask for money from our supporters.” said Kylie Dalton, Head of Development for CLCRF.

CLCRF know the importance of giving, having spent the past 40 years raising funds for childhood cancer research. They also understand the impact that isolation can have on families – working with many to tell their stories, who repeatedly need to spend months on end in hospital away from their extended family and friends.

“We encourage everybody to get involved, we all must know somebody that needs a little bit of kindness.” said Ms Dalton. “It’s why these 40 acts of kindness in the community can really make a difference!”

The 40Kin40days initiative also aims to help support the donating businesses, with each of the 40 days dedicated to showcasing one business per day, to give them important attention and associate them with a wonderful community cause. The aim is to keep their brand top of mind in these difficult times and in turn, allow people to become invested in that local business and in the child cancer research cause, along with the history of the Foundation through social story telling.

To add further content for sharing, Foundation ambassadors, local personalities and dignitaries who support the Foundation, will be sharing their stories and encouragements through the daily newsfeeds. CLCRF Patron and Australian Cricket Coach, Justin Langer AM, is fully supportive of the 40Kin40days campaign, with this year also being a milestone in his relationship with the Foundation.

“I have enjoyed being a Patron for CLCRF for the past 20 years and I’m really excited about the 40Kin40days campaign. I see this as being a great way to support those who really need it. I hope you all get behind it too.”

CLCRF invites you to head to 40kin40days.com.au choose one of the gifts, then submit a nominee, explaining why that person needs or deserves the chosen gift.

Naturally, monetary personal contributions to CLCRF are incredibly welcome too but the main purpose of the campaign is to create the Circle of Kindness and help people in need.

Any businesses who wish to donate a gift are welcome to contact CLCRF on 9363 7400 or email [email protected]. For more information on how the circle of kindness works visit: 40kin40days.com.au

Did you know Danny Green was a hit with CLCRF?

Many of our supporters may know Justin Langer to be CLCRF’s Patron however, from 2004 to 2011, he was not alone in this prestigious role. Justin was in fact joined by none other than Perth boxing great Danny Green.

The Foundation was delighted to extend an invitation to Danny to be a Patron of the Foundation on May 10, 2004. It was thought that his international sporting profile would help raise much needed awareness of childhood cancer research and he was deemed a good fit for the Foundation, epitomising a true Aussie battler and always being a shining light of integrity and sportsmanship. Much like Justin, Danny also showed a passion for caring for children.

Prior to this invitation, Danny showed himself to be a generous supporter of the Foundation. In 2003, he generously donated a signed set of boxing gloves, a fight photo, and a shirt and cap to the Corporate Golf Day auction. Later that year, he also visited our research laboratory to present cancer patient, Lane Martino (representing the Foundation), with a cheque of $5,000 to assist with research.

As our patron, Danny Green helped the Foundation raise much needed funds for childhood cancer research by encouraging community support at fundraising events. In 2004, Danny joined Justin in helping 10-year-old Chris Parsons with “Remember Sinead Day”, an event he created in honour of his dear friend Sinead Murdoch who passed away from leukaemia. In its inaugural year, the event raised over $65,000 for childhood cancer research.

Danny provided wonderful support for the Foundation as a Patron and the manner in which he brought awareness to childhood cancer research was exceptional and most appreciated.

Leave a meaningful Gift in Will for future generations

We understand and respect that family comes first when it comes to considering your Will, but it is also a great opportunity to make a lasting impact.

By including a gift to the Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer Research Foundation (CLCRF) in your Will, you can help us ensure the ground-breaking research into childhood cancer can continue for many years to come, bringing hope to all children battling the gruelling disease.

Anyone can leave a Gift in Will, however large or small, and it is a relatively quick and easy process. You can leave money, property or a percentage of your estate after your death; and with it your stamp on the future.

Making a Gift in Will allows you to support your favourite cause, or causes, beyond your lifetime and it ensures that there is a legal document outlining your wishes. This should give you the peace of mind that you are not only planning ahead for those you care for, but you will also be generously helping an important cause in the future.

As the Foundation does not receive State or Federal funding, we rely on the generous support of the community to help us in our commitment to see future generations live cancer free.

For further information or to advise us that you have included Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer Research Foundation in your Will – in the strictest confidence – please contact us on 9363 7400 or email [email protected].

Giving back isn’t cancelled!

In light of #GivingTuesdayNow on May 5 – an opportunity to encourage generosity during these uncertain times – we want to share ways you can support us right from your own home. We understand that times are tough for many of us, so we want to remind you that there are so many ways you can continue to support the Foundation other than making a financial contribution.

Here are some great ideas for how you can support childhood cancer research:

Support us on social media

Social media is a great way to show your support and it won’t cost you a thing! By following our social media channels and engaging with our content, you will be helping us raise awareness for childhood cancer research. So be sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. We also encourage you to share your own stories on social media about why you support CLCRF. If you do decide to share your stories of support, please tag us or use the #CLCRF hashtag so we can see your posts and thank you!

Buy a raffle ticket

By buying a raffle ticket from CLCRF, not only will you be helping to fund childhood cancer research, but you will also go into the draw to win a whopping $15,000! Although this way of supporting us isn’t free, raffle tickets are only $2 each and you have the freedom to purchase as few or as many as you like. Our next raffle will be drawn on Tuesday, June 30 so be sure to purchase your ticket before then for your chance to win big!

Ask for gift donations

If you have a birthday coming up and your loved ones are asking for gift ideas, why not ask them to make a donation to CLCRF instead? Asking for a donation as a gift is a great way to make your special day more meaningful as you will be helping an important cause during such a crucial time.

Facebook’s partnership with PayPal offers a convenient and secure way to raise funds on your birthday by allowing you to create your own fundraiser page. All you need to do is click the “create” button on the top of your Facebook page, then select the “Fundraiser” option. When asked what charity to donate to, simply search for “Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer Research Foundation” and you will see our account.

Register to be a volunteer for CLCRF

Since having to postpone many of our upcoming events, our need for volunteers has reduced – but this doesn’t mean you can’t still register your interest to help us at a later date! Without the invaluable help of our volunteers, we would not be able to run our community events or raise as much money for childhood cancer research.

Have your own fun run

This year’s HBF Run for a Reason may be cancelled, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still have your own fun run for CLCRF! The event has kept their fundraising pages open, meaning you can still show your support for the initiative. So why not create a fundraising page and ask your friends and family to support you as you do your own run, walk, or jog. You can head to your local park or, if you live in a quiet area and it’s safe to do so, plan a run around your neighbourhood.

At a time when we’re all experiencing the pandemic, generosity and the power to make a positive change in the lives of others is what can bring us together. If you choose to support the CLCRF cause in your own creative way during this time, we would love to hear about it – be sure to tag us on Facebook or Instagram!

Connecting in Isolation

Written by Kara Nell

You know… it will be ok. I’m watching the world and in unprecedented, uncertain times I see it destabilises us all. It’s scary times. It’s the unknown. We’re thrown into a world we don’t understand. We’re unsure what the future holds. We have lost our stability, some of us our financial security, some of us are unable to see our loved ones through fear of spreading or catching a virus.

I see it. I’ve lived it before. From someone who knows. From someone who has had their world turned upside down in one moment, who has been thrown into an unknown world. From someone who has lived day after day, week after week, month after month in isolation… it will be ok. It will pass.

You will somehow find your strength, realise the true value of life, realise that those little things, the small moments, they matter. More than you could ever imagine. You will see acts of kindness that will take your breath away. You will understand that we all react differently when life throws us curve balls but really, where is the beauty in life without those differences? You will struggle, cry, face those fears head on. You will be ok.

It’s isolation. It’s not easy. The biggest lesson you could learn, if there’s one thing you realise in these tough times, it’s to count your blessings. There is light to be found in the dark. There are always others who have it so much worse. There is calm and hope when the storm passes. It’s ok if it feels tough, if you’re overwhelmed, frustrated, scared of what the future holds.

Isolation is tough. It will teach you who you are. It will show the world your strengths and weaknesses. You will be you, warts and all. Savour those small moments. Hug your kids, love them. Spend time together. Don’t worry about the curriculum. Don’t compare yourself. Don’t fear time lost. Don’t waste time thinking what you should be doing, how life should be. If you do one thing over the next few months, be in the moment. Connect with your children. Love them. Forgive yourself. Dance. Wrap your arms around your family.

Let this smile remind you…academics, money, wealth…in the end…when everything else is gone…love remains 💚 how lucky are we to spend such quality time with those who mean the most to us? I’d give everything for one more moment with this smile ❤️🎗
