Filming Dr Sébastien Malinge

On Thursday 12 April, Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer Research Foundation Inc. had the privilege of filming an interview with Dr Sébastien Malinge, Ursula Kees Fellow, at the Telethon Kids Institute who moved from France to Perth six months ago. He is one of the brilliant scientists working in the CLCRF lab at the Telethon Kids Institute.

Sébastien shared his passion for finding out why children with Down’s Syndrome have a higher incidence of leukaemia. He completed a post-doctoral fellowship in the US before moving to Paris to continue his research in 2012. Moving to Perth with his family, he is enjoying the peaceful lifestyle as compared to the hustle and bustle of Paris.

Dr Malinge believes that funding research into leukaemia is essential to help build a better future for all children suffering from leukaemia.

We will be editing the footage together and presenting a video of the interview very soon, so please stay tuned!

Ciao Italia from CLCRF!

Ciao Italia from CLCRF! Andrea Alexander, Executive Officer of CLCRF, was recently filmed in an interview to be televised soon on a popular Italian television program, La Prova del Cuoco, the Italian version of ‘Ready Steady Cook’. The show is televised on RAI, a national public broadcasting company of Italy and is hosted by popular journalist and presenter, Antonella Clerici.

This opportunity was organised by Antonio Argentieri from Italy who will also be featured on the show. Antonio is a well-known cake decorator in Italy and Foundation friend who has shown incredible support for the CLCRF.

The interview was filmed in Perth on 9 April and provided a chance for Andrea to talk about the Foundation as well as Antonio’s support and passion for funding child cancer research through the CLCRF.

On 17 August 2017, Antonio and the Cake Decorators Association organised the 19th Cake Decorating Seminar held in Rendezvous Hotel, Perth, where they raised money for the Foundation. Since that time, Antonio has continued to show wonderful support for the CLCRF.

The CLCRF thanks Antonio Argentieri, Antonella Clerici, and RAI for giving us the opportunity to highlight the need for funding the fight against cancer in children.

Georgia Lowry speaks at the International Women’s Day Lunch

On 8 March or International Women’s Day, our ambassador, Georgia Lowry, spoke at the Westpac sponsored International Women’s Day Luncheon in Merredin. It was a wonderful time to celebrate and be inspired by the achievements of women.

Speakers included motivational speaker Tanya Dupagne, WA Business Woman of the Year 2015, Dr April Armstrong, and of course Georgia Lowry, who also is the Equestrian State Champion.

The three-course lunch with champagne at the Cummins Theatre in Merredin was abuzz with excitement as each speaker shared and inspired others to think, act and be gender inclusive with friends, colleagues and their communities.

Georgia was very proud to represent the Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer Research Foundation (Inc.) at the lunch and she spoke about her experiences.

“I was amongst some major superstars and friends and was privileged to be a guest speaker,” said Georgia.

What a wonderful event and we are very proud of Georgia and her efforts to represent the Foundation, as well as support women everywhere.

Dr Rishi Investigates New Cancer Drug in the Fight Against Infant Leukaemia

Dr Rishi Sury Kotecha is one of the scientists conducting child cancer research at the Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer Research Foundation (Inc.) Lab at the Telethon Kids Institute. His expertise lies in preclinical and clinical leukaemia research and he is currently conducting studies into a key new drug called Blinatumomab. In the study, he will be examining whether the drug, Blinatumomab, can be safely added to the standard chemotherapy used to treat infants under 12 months of age with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

Blinatumomab is a form of immunotherapy and binds to both the leukaemia cells and T-cells, which are important in our body’s natural defence against infections, facilitating destruction of the leukaemia cells by the T-cells. Dr Rishi believes Blinatumomab is going to be a crucial drug in the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in infants.

Until now, studies have shown that Blinatumomab is safe to use in older children and adults. Dr Rishi’s research is an early phase trial, which aims to see whether using Blinatumomab is safe and feasible for treating infants under 12 months of age.

Most babies with pre-B acute lymphoblastic leukaemia have a very poor survival rate due to a genetic abnormality, which is called a MLL rearrangement. Only 40 percent of babies with this abnormality survive beyond five years. For those under three months of age, there is only 16 percent survival. This highlights the desperate need for better therapies to improve their outcome. It is hoped that Blinatumomab will not only improve the outcome of these infants, but also enable reduction of conventional chemotherapy which is highly toxic to their fragile bodies.

When asked why Dr Rishi chose to specialise in paediatric haematology/oncology, he is very positive “I chose this specialty for the successes that have come from such research. When I receive emails and photos from a child I’ve treated telling me about their lives, such as starting university and having families of their own, I see the impact that research has made on their outcome and it makes it all worthwhile.”

The CLCRF is proud to fund cutting-edge research such as Dr Rishi’s that leads to better outcomes for children with leukaemia.
