Dr Rishi at Kai’s Big GOLD Ball

Guests of Kai’s Big GOLD Ball this year are in for a treat with the recent announcement of Dr Rishi Sury Kotecha as a guest speaker! Dr Rishi is a highly-qualified clinician-scientist and is currently conducting childhood cancer research in the CLCRF lab at the Telethon Kids Institute (TKI).

Dr Rishi’s research expertise lies in preclinical and clinical leukaemia. CLCRF is proud to help fund many of his research projects at TKI, which all have the fundamental goal to improve the outcome for children suffering from leukaemia.

Dr Rishi has authored over 30 original research articles and he and his team recently had a manuscript published in a high impact journal. This significant achievement has allowed the team to share their findings on how a particular drug, called Romidepsin, has showed benefits in infant leukaemia.

With Dr Rishi’s wealth of knowledge and natural charisma, there is no doubt that his guest appearance is going to be one of many highlights at Kai’s Big GOLD Ball this year.

Strengthening our Relationship with Beyond Bank

Foundation CEO Andrea Alexander recently attended a function at Optus Stadium to meet the Board Members of Beyond Bank. This was a great opportunity for the Foundation to strengthen our relationship with Beyond Bank and meet other community partners.

We would like to give a special thanks to Katie Tillson Voss and Georgina Nicholas for the invitation to the function, which also featured a guest talk by Dale Alcock.

South West Bike Trek back for 2019!

After having huge success in previous years, we are so excited for the South West Bike Trek to be back in 2019!

The 2019 South West Bike Trek is set to commence on Sunday 13 October in Subiaco near the Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer Research Foundation office and it will finish in Augusta on Saturday 19 October. The wonderful event has once again been organised by CLCRF member and trek organiser, Eric Maddock, with the help of Lions and Rotary Clubs.

Volunteers needed for the Perth Tradie Expo

Each year, Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer Research Foundation (Inc.) participates in the Perth Tradie Expo and we are on the lookout for some more volunteers to help collect donations over the weekend. This year, the Expo will take place at the Ascot Racecourse on 21-23 June from 8am to 5pm.

The Expo is proudly sponsored by Toolmart and provides a second to none chance to purchase all types of work equipment from power tools to excavator’s at special Expo prices. There’s not just great savings for work tools but you’ll also find amazing specials on vehicles, camper-trailers, accessories, machinery and much, much more.

The Perth Tradie Expo is open to the General Public and entry is only a Gold Coin donation. These donations are collected by our amazing volunteers and will go towards two charities, including the Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer Research Foundation. Last year, our wonderful volunteers collected a grand total of $5,182.45!

If you are interested in volunteering, you can choose your shift and volunteer as little or as much as you like! Not only will you have the opportunity to experience this wonderful expo but you would also be collecting much-needed funds for CLCRF to continue the important research into childhood cancer.

IMPORTANT INFO:
– To collect donations you need to be at least 16 years of age. If you would like to volunteer with younger children or siblings, there may be other volunteer jobs available for them, such as handing out fliers.

Not only is the blend delicious but proceeds from every bag sold are donated towards continuing the important research into childhood cancer.

The blend is 100% Arabica coffee beans and is roasted for a richer intensity, with great nutty flavours and a milk chocolate finish. Jackson’s Story

Jackson is one of over 600 Australian children who are diagnosed with cancer every year. Just like many of these children, Jackson has spent the majority of his short life in hospital fighting the horrible disease.

Jackson’s Story begins with a suspected stomach bug when he was just 7 months old. Two different GPs brushed it off as a virus but Jackson’s mum Michelle remained concerned when his stomach seemed swollen and the vomiting and diarrhoea continued. After the second GP visit, Jackson vomited all over the floor at Woolworths and his eyes started to roll to the back of his head. A nearby midwife told Michelle to take Jackson to the hospital immediately.

“I kept saying Jackson, Jackson to try and get him to respond but he wasn’t really responding.” Says Michelle. “I just started panicking and panicking more now that a nurse had seen him and was worried enough to tell me to go to hospital.”

Michelle took Jackson to Bunbury Hospital and after being concerned about dark bruises on the top of his forehead, he was sent to a CT scan. A paediatrician then examined Jackson and Michele asked if she should be calling her husband Marc, who was working away, to come home.

“I remember the doctor looking up at me and the look on his face said everything. Without seeing the blood results, he was 99% sure that Jackson had leukaemia.”

They went straight to the Emergency Department at Perth’s Children’s Hospital where Jackson was diagnosed with both Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) and Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML). Since his diagnosis Jackson has experienced many setbacks on his treatment journey, including a staph infection, a murmur in his heart and a relapse of AML in his right testis. He has undergone intense high dose chemotherapy, a bone marrow transplant and radiation therapy.

Jackson and his family still have a tough road ahead of them to beat this horrible disease. The family currently have to wait another three months to see if Jackson’s bone marrow transplant was successful, in the hope that he might be in complete remission.

2018 Southwest Bike Trek raises over $35,000

Kicking, or pedalling, off on Sunday the 7th of October was the 2018 inaugural Southwest Bike Trek. The bike trek started at Mueller Park in Subiaco and finished in Augusta on Saturday the 13th of October.

The trek was organised by Foundation member, Eric Maddock, with the help of Lions and Rotary Clubs.

12 riders completed the 600km bike ride, raising a total of $36,376 to help fund important research into childhood cancers. This brings the total funds raised over the past 16 years close to $700,000!

Riders rode through the wonderful southwest towns of Fairbridge, Harvey, Bunbury, Busselton, Margaret River and Augusta.

Participating in the bike ride this time was Katelyn Lush, Executive Assistant of CLCRF. Katelyn diligently trained for several months with the help of Eric, who she thanks for taking the time to make sure she was prepared.

“In the beginning, I never thought I’d be able to actually do it and travel the entire distance but I am beyond ecstatic and overwhelmed to have reached the end with a fantastic bunch of riders and support crew,” Katelyn says. “You can do anything if you set your mind to it, I did!”

The riders were fortunate enough to enjoy lovely weather throughout the trek. “7 days on the bike and we only had a tiny bit of rain, which for a first-time trekker, was very much appreciated,” Katelyn says.

The team were overwhelmed by the amount of support they received from local communities of WA’s South West during the trek, who deserve acknowledgement.

“The support from all the Lions and Rotary clubs as well as the Binningup Senior Citizens, Mooba Coffee, Jarra Infusions, The Beach Shack Cafe and Swings Kitchen made sure no rider went hungry. It would also be remiss of me not to thank Bunbury Toyota for providing a support vehicle and PEACH for their funding of lights, first aid kit and signs.” Says Eric.

It was also great to see local schools getting involved, including St Joseph’s School in Waroona and Harvey Primary school who brought 65 kids and the principal for a bit of fresh air and exercise.

The Foundation would like to commend the efforts of all who participated in the Southwest Bike Trek and we look forward to another successful bike ride in 2019!

Raising crucial funds in memory of three brave little boys

The Februhairy Fun Razor, formerly referred to as Decembeared, asks men to grow a beard throughout February and raise money to shave it off at the end of the month. This Februhairy, Jon Wannberg hopes to raise at least $300 through their small office and with the help of friends in neighbouring offices.

Fundraising efforts by Jon and the CLCRF research project 3 Boy Legacy (3BL) have helped obtain equipment and consumables for ongoing research, which has greatly helped their team at the Telethon Institute for Child Health Research.

3BL are always welcoming new fundraising ideas to further support CLCRF, having also held art expos and fun runs in the past. “I’m always looking for an opportunity to raise funds for children’s cancer research…” says Jon, “…whether it’s through marathon running in England or Sweden or growing a beard in Australia.”

In 1996, three young boys, Matthew Webb, Justin Ward and Ricky Wannberg, tragically lost their lives to brain cancer. To honour their courageous battles, the families established the 3 Boys Legacy (3BL), a brain cancer research project administered by the CLCRF. 3BL aims to raise awareness and funds for children’s brain cancer research, “led by Research Fellow Dr Peter Dallas.

“There have been steady advances in our understanding of the molecular biology of medulloblastoma, which is the most common type of childhood malignant brain tumour.” Said Dr Peter Dallas.

“Overall, there is currently unprecedented optimism in the childhood cancer field that new, patient specific, and more effective treatments for medulloblastoma will become a reality within the next 10 years.”

CLCRF Joins the PayPal Giving Fund

We are pleased to announce that we have joined the PayPal Giving Fund, allowing our supporters to easily make donations through Facebook. The PayPal Giving Fund also gives our supporters the ability to use Facebook to set up their own fundraisers in support of CLCRF or any other charity of their choice.

This new service allows for secure online donations and there are no fees for organisations or individual donors, meaning 100% of the funds are distributed directly to the intended charity or not-for-profit organisation.

Innovations like this are important to help not-for-profit organisations survive in our increasingly cashless and mobile society.
