Jon Wannberg makes his birthday count

For his birthday this year, long-time supporter of CLCRF, Jon Wannberg, is once again asking his family and friends for one of the most meaningful gifts of all – a donation towards childhood cancer research.

Jon has set up his own birthday fundraiser on Facebook, allowing people to conveniently and securely make a donation through the social media platform.

“I’ve chosen this cause in memory of my son, Ricky,” said Jon. “And I hope you’ll consider this as a way to celebrate his memory with me.”

Jon sadly lost Ricky to a brain tumour in 1996 when he was just 5 years old. Since then, he has actively raised funds and awareness for childhood cancer research. He and two other families formed the “3 Boys Legacy” (3BL) research foundation in 1998, in memory of Ricky and 2 of Ricky’s friends who lost their battle with the same type of cancer.

3BL’s past fundraising efforts have included art exhibitions and fun runs. Jon also came up with the Februhairy Fun Razor, where he asked men to grow a beard throughout February and shave it off at the end of the month to raise money.

For his birthday fundraiser this year, Jon’s goal was to reach a total of $300. In just 6 days, his friends and family have helped him smash that goal, raising $475 and counting!

“Every little bit will help towards preventing other children having to endure what Ricky did or at least improve the likelihood of survival and quality of life,” said Jon.

We are so appreciative for Jon’s generosity and ongoing support. This is the second year that he has decided to create a fundraiser for his birthday. If you would like to help Jon celebrate his birthday while helping to make a difference, you can donate to his birthday fundraiser today!

Young boy shaves head to support friend battling Leukaemia

A young boy has made a selfless gesture to support his friend who has been diagnosed with a rare form of Leukaemia. After his friend began to lose his hair through chemotherapy, the last thing Luke wanted was for him to feel embarrassed about it.

The compassionate 11-year-old therefore decided to join his friend and shave his head too. His dad Michael asked him if he wanted a ‘number 5’ shave first, in case he didn’t like it. Luke’s response was, “it’s not about me and my appearance Dad. I need to do this for my friend.”

“Luke’s friend would often join in class chats via Zoom” said Michael. “Every time he saw Luke on the screen, he began to smile as Luke stood out amongst his peers.”

Luke took his act of kindness even further by asking his family and friends to help him raise money for CLCRF and Perth Children’s Hospital so that he could help other sick children. He was able to raise an incredible total of $512 and donated $256 to the Foundation.

We would like to thank Luke for his generous donation and for showing his support for all children battling the gruelling disease. You can show your support by making a donation towards childhood cancer research today!

Giving back isn’t cancelled!

In light of #GivingTuesdayNow on May 5 – an opportunity to encourage generosity during these uncertain times – we want to share ways you can support us right from your own home. We understand that times are tough for many of us, so we want to remind you that there are so many ways you can continue to support the Foundation other than making a financial contribution.

Here are some great ideas for how you can support childhood cancer research:

Support us on social media

Social media is a great way to show your support and it won’t cost you a thing! By following our social media channels and engaging with our content, you will be helping us raise awareness for childhood cancer research. So be sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. We also encourage you to share your own stories on social media about why you support CLCRF. If you do decide to share your stories of support, please tag us or use the #CLCRF hashtag so we can see your posts and thank you!

Buy a raffle ticket

By buying a raffle ticket from CLCRF, not only will you be helping to fund childhood cancer research, but you will also go into the draw to win a whopping $15,000! Although this way of supporting us isn’t free, raffle tickets are only $2 each and you have the freedom to purchase as few or as many as you like. Our next raffle will be drawn on Tuesday, June 30 so be sure to purchase your ticket before then for your chance to win big!

Ask for gift donations

If you have a birthday coming up and your loved ones are asking for gift ideas, why not ask them to make a donation to CLCRF instead? Asking for a donation as a gift is a great way to make your special day more meaningful as you will be helping an important cause during such a crucial time.

Facebook’s partnership with PayPal offers a convenient and secure way to raise funds on your birthday by allowing you to create your own fundraiser page. All you need to do is click the “create” button on the top of your Facebook page, then select the “Fundraiser” option. When asked what charity to donate to, simply search for “Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer Research Foundation” and you will see our account.

Register to be a volunteer for CLCRF

Since having to postpone many of our upcoming events, our need for volunteers has reduced – but this doesn’t mean you can’t still register your interest to help us at a later date! Without the invaluable help of our volunteers, we would not be able to run our community events or raise as much money for childhood cancer research.

Have your own fun run

This year’s HBF Run for a Reason may be cancelled, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still have your own fun run for CLCRF! The event has kept their fundraising pages open, meaning you can still show your support for the initiative. So why not create a fundraising page and ask your friends and family to support you as you do your own run, walk, or jog. You can head to your local park or, if you live in a quiet area and it’s safe to do so, plan a run around your neighbourhood.

At a time when we’re all experiencing the pandemic, generosity and the power to make a positive change in the lives of others is what can bring us together. If you choose to support the CLCRF cause in your own creative way during this time, we would love to hear about it – be sure to tag us on Facebook or Instagram!

Registrations are now open for the 2020 HBF Run for a Reason! This year, Western Australia’s most well-loved community event will take place on Sunday, May 24.

You can help us raise important funds for childhood cancer research by choosing the Foundation as your reason to participate in either the Commonwealth Bank 4k, the Kleenheat 12k or the Brooks Half Marathon.

The Commonwealth Bank 4km course is the perfect non-competitive course for those looking to have a fun day out with their family and friends. The 4km course takes you on a scenic tour of Perth as you make your way along the Swan River. It’s also loaded with fun surprises and entertainment!

The Kleenheat 12km course is a great choice for those who are looking for more of a running challenge or need a longer walk to chat to their friends. 40 years of making a difference

This year is a very special one for the Foundation, as it marks our 40th year of raising funds and awareness for childhood cancer research! Upon reaching this milestone, we reflect on our past achievements and look forward to continuing to make a difference in the lives of children and families facing a cancer diagnosis.

Over the past 40 years, we have raised a substantial amount of funds for important research projects at the Telethon Kids Institute which has assisted children in WA, nationwide, and internationally. One of our biggest achievements would have to be funding the first cancer cell bank, which has contributed to positive outcomes for a number of families.

We are so proud of the ground-breaking work we have helped to fund over the years and have been thrilled to see survival rates increase as a result. It was recorded that only 20 per cent of children with cancer survived 50 years ago, which has since improved to 80 per cent for some forms of cancer.

There is still however a lot more work to be done and we are committed to ensuring this research can continue so that future generations can live cancer free.

As we do not receive any government funding, our biggest goal going into this milestone year is to grow our support base. CLCRF relies significantly on the generosity of our community and there are so many ways, big and small, to help us to continue to make a difference.

We have a lot of exciting plans in store for our supporters this year and we encourage you to keep an eye on our socials to stay across all of our upcoming opportunities and events. To stay in the know, you can like us on Facebook, follow us on Instagram, and sign up to our email newsletter.

We would like to sincerely thank everyone who has supported us over the past 40 years, the Foundation would not be where it is today without your support! A special thanks goes to our members who have been critical to the ongoing success of the Foundation. Not a member yet? Become one today!
