More than 20 cyclists from Perth and the South West will hit the road on Sunday for a week-long ride to raise money for children’s cancer research.

The South West Bike Trek will see 24 riders start in Subiaco and journey through the South West in the hope of raising $40,000 for the Children’s Leukaemia and Cancer Research Foundation.

Along the way riders will stop off at Fairbridge, Preston, Harvey, Eaton, Busselton and Margaret River.

Bunbury cyclists Ken Pritchard and Doreen Dow will be participating for their second and sixth year respectively, and will cover a gruelling 600km.

Neither have a tie to the cause and simply signed up for the challenge of the ride, but Mr Pritchard said it was not long until he found himself wanting to do more to raise money for the cause.

“I originally did the ride for the challenge but then got caught up in the fundraising of the ride and I’ve done other things here and there with the foundation now,” he said.

“The friendships and the way the group bonds is amazing… by the third day you’re one big family.”

On Tuesday riders will visit Shire of Harvey offices for an afternoon tea and have dinner at the Rotary Club of Harvey.

On Wednesday the riders will take students from Harvey Primary School for a spin before attending dinner at the South Bunbury Rotary Club.

Age is no Barrier for Paula Prynne

Paula Prynne, great-grandmother from South Yunderup, will prove that age is no barrier while raising money for CLCRF at this year’s South West Bike Trek.

The 80-year old will ride an incredible 600 kilometres over six days, starting in Subiaco on October 13 and ending in Augusta. Paula and her fellow cyclists will stop in the wonderful towns of Fairbridge, Preston, Harvey, Eaton, Busselton and Margaret River.

This will be the longest ride to date for the Mandurah Over 55 Cycling Club member and, despite her only been cycling for two years, Paula holds little nerves thanks to her training.

“I’ve been training quite thoroughly for this, riding roughly 250kms per week, and I’ll be riding with a group so it’s completely safe,” said Paula. “It’s not compulsory for participants to finish the ride but I’m quite confident I can get it done.”

Paula completed her first cycling event in the Great Ocean Ride last year and she plans to make raising money through cycling an annual tradition.

“I find cycling gives me something to look forward to and I honestly just love it,” Paula explained. “And if I can take the thing I love doing and use it to raise money to help these kids that might be going through hell, then that’s all the better.”

We praise Paula for not letting her age be a barrier and we wish her the best of luck for the South West Bike Trek, which will take place from October 13 to 19.

The South West Bike Trek aims to raise funds for important research into childhood cancer research and this year the target to reach is $50,000. If you would like to join Paula and help raise funds for the Foundation, registrations are still open for the 2019 South West Bike Trek. Alternatively, you can help support the cause by making a donation to the Foundation.

South Yunderup great-grandmother Paula Prynne will prove age is no barrier while raising money for the Children’s Leukaemia and Cancer Research Foundation when she cycles her way from Subiaco to Augusta next month.

The 80-year-old local will be riding a whopping 600 kilometres over six days as part of the annual South West Bike Trek, setting out from the charity’s base on October 13.

From there she and her group of fellow cyclists will hit the road bound for stops in Fairbridge, Preston, Harvey, Eaton, Busselton and Margaret River before finally ending their course in Augusta.

For Prynne, who has been cycling just short of two years now, it will be her longest ride to date.

But the Mandurah Over 55 Cycling Club member holds little nerves, claiming her training has put her in good stead.

“I’m not overly nervous at all, no,” she said.

“I’ve been training quite thoroughly for this, riding roughly 250kms per week, and I’ll be riding with a group so it’s completely safe.

“It’s not compulsory for participants to finish the ride but I’m quite confident I can get it done.”

Prynne took up cycling as a means to improve her overall health back in 2017, with the hobby quickly becoming a passion.

She completed her first charity event after participating in the Great Ocean Ride last year, and plans to make raising money for a worthy cause through cycling an annual tradition.

“I think a lot of it is about having a sense of purpose,” she said.

“I find cycling gives me something to look forward to and I honestly just love it.

“And if I can take the thing I love doing and use it to raise money to help these kids that might be going through hell, then that’s all the better.

“My family are all extremely supportive so that helps a lot too.”

Prynne rides with the Mandurah Over 55 Cycling Club twice a week, while carrying out her own 40km rides almost daily.

It’s a testing workload, but she’s adamant she has no plans to slow up just yet.

“I’ll keep doing it for as long as I can,” she said.

“It’s a real sense of achievement that I find invaluable.”

2018 Southwest Bike Trek raises over $35,000

Kicking, or pedalling, off on Sunday the 7th of October was the 2018 inaugural Southwest Bike Trek. The bike trek started at Mueller Park in Subiaco and finished in Augusta on Saturday the 13th of October.

The trek was organised by Foundation member, Eric Maddock, with the help of Lions and Rotary Clubs.

12 riders completed the 600km bike ride, raising a total of $36,376 to help fund important research into childhood cancers. This brings the total funds raised over the past 16 years close to $700,000!

Riders rode through the wonderful southwest towns of Fairbridge, Harvey, Bunbury, Busselton, Margaret River and Augusta.

Participating in the bike ride this time was Katelyn Lush, Executive Assistant of CLCRF. Katelyn diligently trained for several months with the help of Eric, who she thanks for taking the time to make sure she was prepared.

“In the beginning, I never thought I’d be able to actually do it and travel the entire distance but I am beyond ecstatic and overwhelmed to have reached the end with a fantastic bunch of riders and support crew,” Katelyn says. “You can do anything if you set your mind to it, I did!”

The riders were fortunate enough to enjoy lovely weather throughout the trek. “7 days on the bike and we only had a tiny bit of rain, which for a first-time trekker, was very much appreciated,” Katelyn says.

The team were overwhelmed by the amount of support they received from local communities of WA’s South West during the trek, who deserve acknowledgement.

“The support from all the Lions and Rotary clubs as well as the Binningup Senior Citizens, Mooba Coffee, Jarra Infusions, The Beach Shack Cafe and Swings Kitchen made sure no rider went hungry. It would also be remiss of me not to thank Bunbury Toyota for providing a support vehicle and PEACH for their funding of lights, first aid kit and signs.” Says Eric.

It was also great to see local schools getting involved, including St Joseph’s School in Waroona and Harvey Primary school who brought 65 kids and the principal for a bit of fresh air and exercise.

The Foundation would like to commend the efforts of all who participated in the Southwest Bike Trek and we look forward to another successful bike ride in 2019!

A huge congratulations to the 12 riders who completed a 600km bike ride across WA’s South West, raising a total of $36,376* to help fund vital research to combat childhood cancers.

A big thank you to the Leeuwin Lions Club, The Busselton Rotary, Business and Professional Women’s Association, Lions Club of Waroona, Rotary and Lions Club of Harvey, South Bunbury Rotary and several other organisations who kept the hungry riders fed as well as offering generous donations and, in some cases, offering a place to sleep for the night.

Local schools also joined in on the ride, including St Joseph’s School in Waroona and Harvey Primary School who brought along 65 kids and the school principal for a bit of fresh air and exercise.

Charity rider’s wheel power

COMO resident Katelyn Lush is one of 12 cyclists this week riding from Perth to Augusta for the Southwest Bike Trek. The journey across the South-West started on Sunday in Subiaco and has stops at Fairbridge, Preston Beach, Harvey, Eaton, Busselton and Margaret River before finishing at Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, Augusta on Saturday.

Ms Lush, the Children’s Leukaemia and Cancer Research Foundation (CLCRF) executive assistant, said she was no professional cyclist but wanted to give it a crack.
“Two years ago, I cut off my 40cm long hair and shaved my head and raised $13,500 with my friend for charity so this year I thought the bike trek would be the next best thing,” she said.
“I decided to give it a crack and it seemed like a good idea.”

Ms Lush spent 10 months training in the lead-up to the 600km ride. Ms Lush has an Everyday Hero page to raise funds for CLCRF. She has currently raised over $800, beating her goal of $500, but wants to raise more. To donate go to https://bit.ly/2P8J09a.
