A Tea-rrific donation!

One of our incredible supporters, Rebecca Kenna, held a Charity High Tea Event at Catch22 Tapas and Cocktail Lounge in Mandurah last May to raise vital funds for the Foundation. We are so pleased to report that this event raised a total of $364 for childhood cancer research.

The event included delicious treats and tea, as well as amazing raffle prizes. This was Rebecca’s first time hosting a fundraising event and not only do we congratulate her on her success, but we thank her for generously choosing to support our Foundation.

As with every great event, there is usually a team of people who helped make it possible. “I’d like to thank Chantelle Wittaker, Shann Goudge, and my husband Kevin Gardiner for helping me set up the event on the day,” said Rebecca.

“I’d also like to thank those that attended and helped to raise money for CLCRF,” Rebecca expressed. “It was a great turn out and I really hope we can do something like this again.”

We thank Rebecca for her incredible support! If you would like to create your own fundraiser event to support childhood cancer research, please get in touch with us today.

Volunteers Needed

Volunteers needed for the Perth Tradie Expo

The Foundation is thrilled to once again be invited to the Perth Tradie Expo to collect gold coin donations on entry. Now we just need YOUR help! We are on the lookout for volunteers to help collect these donations that will go towards funding the vital research into childhood cancers.

The Tradie Expo will take place from Friday 18 June to Sunday 20 June from 8am to 5pm at Ascot Racecourse. We need volunteers who are willing to come down for an hour or two (or more!) on any of these days to hold a tin at the entry gate.

At the last Tradie Expo in 2019, our wonderful volunteers raised over $6,000 for the Foundation. This was an astounding result, and we are confident that we can raise even more this year with YOUR help!

If you are interested in volunteering at this always-exciting event, get in contact with us today. You have the freedom to choose your own shift and can volunteer as little or as much as you like. Simply contact the CLCRF office on (08) 9363 7400 or email [email protected].

Georgia Lowry

Congrats, Georgia!

In April this year, our wonderful ambassador Georgia Lowry participated in a 3 Phase Event for Horses and Ponies held at the Murray Equestrian Centre just south of Pinjarra.

At this event, over 200 competitors competed over 3 phases – Dressage, Show Jumping and Cross Country (2.5kms with 20 jumps). Georgia competed with her pony Smee, a 13.2 hands welsh pony in the 65cm class. In a class of 24 male and female adult riders, Georgia and Smee finished in 8th place.

In the 80cm class, Georgia competed with her horse named Ticket to Ride (Beatle), a 15 hands horse. In this class, the pair finished in 11th place out of a total 31 male and female adult riders.

This is an incredible achievement for anyone, but especially someone who was only given a two per cent chance of survival after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukaemia at eight weeks old.

“I am very happy with the results,” said Georgia, who kindly took the Foundation along for the ride with her. Georgia sported her CLCRF shirt and matching helmet, paired with one of CLCRF’s ladybug mascots.

We would like to thank Georgia for being such an extraordinary ambassador for childhood cancer research and we congratulate her on her incredible accomplishment!

If you would like to learn more about Georgia’s cancer battle and her love of riding, you can order a copy of her book, Growing Georgia. In this book, Georgia shares her darkest moments and her battle to overcome them, serving as a reminder to anyone fighting their own illnesses that they are not alone.

A Tea-rrific way to raise funds!

We’ve recently caught wind of a wonderful Charity High Tea Event happening in Mandurah this month, which will raise funds for CLCRF.

“It’s a High Tea Event not to be missed,” said event organiser Rebecca. “Not only will this be an amazing afternoon full of fun and laughter, but you will also be helping to raise funds for Children’s Leukaemia and Cancer Research Foundation.”

This is Rebecca’s first time hosting a fundraising event and she has chosen to support CLCRF because the cause hits home to her. “My grandmother had cancer, but she luckily recovered,” she expressed. “The fact that there’s no cure for many cancers made me want to do my part to help research a cure.”

The event will be held at Catch22 Tapas and Cocktail Lounge in Mandurah on May 29 at  2pm. Tickets are $40 each and will include amazing scones, desserts, sandwiches, and, of course, tea. Guests will also have the chance to win one of three amazing raffle prizes on the day.

“I want to allow people who may have suffered, or know someone who is suffering, with the disease to come together and become friends while also raising funds for the amazing cause,” Rebecca expressed.

For more information about this wonderful event, head to the Facebook Event Page. If you would like to buy tickets, all you need to do is send Rebecca an email.

We thank Rebecca for creating this event to raise funds for CLCRF. The Foundation relies greatly on this kind of community support to ensure the vital research into childhood cancers can continue.

Support CLCRF at Grill’d Shafto Lane

You may have seen that CLCRF was chosen to participate in Grill’d Scarborough’s Local Matters Initiative last month. Now, we are so excited to let you know that Grill’d Shafto Lane has chosen CLCRF to participate in their Local Matters this month!

Each month, every Grill’d restaurant displays three Local Matters jars representing three different community groups. With every burger ordered, a token is handed over for customers to drop into the jar of their choice. At the end of the month, $500 is split between the community groups, with the jar with the most tokens receiving a $300 donation and the other two each receiving a $100 donation.

This is an excellent way for the restaurant to give back and support the communities that have always supported them, while getting their customers involved to help make a difference.

Located right in the centre of Perth, Grill’d Shafto Lane is the perfect spot for dinner before a big night out or a chilled burger night. Be sure to visit Grill’d Shafto Lane this month and help us receive a $300 donation from the restaurant.

Cara’s cut for cancer

The Foundation has recently received the amazing support of Cara Davis who cut her very long hair to raise funds for childhood cancer research. “I decided to cut my hair and donate it to be made into a wig,” said Cara. “I then thought why not raise some money whilst I am at it!”

Cara created a Facebook Fundraiser, encouraging her family and friends to donate to CLCRF to raise funds for childhood cancer research being done in Western Australia. Thanks to her very generous supporters, Cara was able to raise a total of $3,170!

“I want to thank everyone for your amazing support and generosity for such an incredible cause,” Cara expressed on her Fundraiser page. Cara is now rocking a beautiful new hair style which will help remind her of the difference she has helped make for future generations of children.

The Foundation thanks Cara and everyone who donated to her Facebook Fundraiser. Facebook Fundraisers are an excellent way to support a cause you are passionate about. There are also no processing fees, so 100% of donations will go directly to the charity.

Want to set you your own Facebook Fundraiser for CLCRF? All you need to do is head to the Fundraiser Creator Page, select the Charity option, and search for “Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer Research Foundation (Inc).”

Riding around Australia for childhood cancer

In one of the most exciting supporter-run fundraisers yet, Brian “Beetle” Bayley will be riding around Australia on his motorcycle to support childhood cancer research!

Brian will begin his ride in September this year and he is calling it the 40 Days for Kids Cancer Ride, with his journey expected to take this long. With 40 being the magic number, he hopes to raise a whopping $40,000 for the Foundation.

Allowing our supporters to follow along the journey, Brian will have a SPOT tracker with him. He has also created a map of his intended journey but warns “as all you adventurers know, many eventualities get in the way, so my plans will be flexible.”

This isn’t the first time Brian will be riding his bike across Australia. In 2017-18, Brian and his wife set off from Perth to ride all the way to Sydney and back, taking inspiration from Winifred Wells’ solo ride in 1950-51.

Winifred Wells became the first woman to cross Australia on a motorcycle when she was 22 years old, riding coast to coast from her home in Perth. Brian’s trip this year aims to celebrate Winifred’s second big ride, where she rode around Australia with her father. Once again, Brian will be riding the same type of motorcycle Winifred used, a Royal Enfield 350.

We are so excited to follow Brian on his journey this year and are so grateful for his decision to support CLCRF. “I want to do something for children in the future,” expressed Brian. Brian’s ambition will go a long way to help us in our commitment to see future generations of children live the long and fulfilling lives they deserve.

You can help motivate Brian by showing your support on his Facebook Fundraiser Page. If you prefer to donate directly to us, you can make a donation through our website or over the phone (08 9363 7400). Simply let us know if your donation is for Brian’s fundraiser (by mentioning “Brian Bayley” or “40 Days for Kids Cancer Ride”) so we can allocate it to his total fundraising tally.

Grilling for a good cause

The Foundation thanks Jack Shembrey who recently lit up the barbie to raise funds and awareness for the vital research into childhood cancer. Jack generously hosted a BBQ Fundraiser for his friends, where he encouraged them to make a donation towards CLCRF.

“When I first read that childhood cancer research had resulted in an increase to an 80% survival rate in the last 50 years, I was struck by how effectively research equates to positive outcomes for patients,” said Jack. “It prompted me to start a fundraiser to donate some money and start talking about how amazing this charity and the research it supports is.”

Although faced with number restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the BBQ was a huge success, raising a delightful total of $325. This comfortably surpassed Jack’s original goal of $250.

“Without taking away from many other worthwhile causes, I think any step we can take toward minimising the suffering caused by cancer in kids is particularly worth taking,” Jack expressed.

A BBQ fundraiser is a great way to raise money for an important cause while allowing your friends to get involved to help make a difference. If you are thinking of planning a BBQ fundraiser, or any other fundraiser of your own, we would love to hear all about it! Simply get in touch with us via email or by giving us a call on (08) 9363 7400.
