Top Tips for The Plus Fitness Currambine Oar-Inspiring Indoor Row

Who’s excited to take on the ultimate rowing challenge to help support childhood cancer research? Plus Fitness Currambine will be kindly hosting The Oar-Inspiring Indoor Row at their gym on Saturday 3 October, where participants will race a marathon on Concept 2 Rowers in teams of 4.

To help you get prepared for this thrilling event, Paul from Plus Fitness Currambine has put together “8 to be great” tips!

  1. Preparation is key
Make sure you have done your prep prior to the big day supplies, water, food, supplements, music, training etc.
  2. Regular rowing
Try to row as often as possible with your training schedule prior to the big day. I once asked a 5-time world kick boxing champion at a seminar how I could improve my kicking. Waiting on a fancy, elaborate answer he simply replied – KICK! Whatever it is you want to get better at just do and do it regularly.
  3. Hydration
It’s going to be a long workout so keeping hydrated is very important. Water, isotonic drinks and the like.
  4. Nutrition
Don’t jump on the rower with a full stomach. Eat well before the start and make sure you snack throughout the session. NOT WITH BURGERS!
  5. Support
Having good support from family, friends and loved ones is essential when undertaking a challenge like this. Bring people with you to cheer you and your team mates on.
  6. Pace
Unless you are going for the win or a PB (Personal best) then pace the race. Don’t go too hard too soon otherwise it will become a very uncomfortable grind to the finish.
  7. Training Schedule
Make sure you are adding in good quality training leading up to the challenge. Endurance is key here so ask for training programs to help.
  8. Celebrate your achievement
What you have just completed needs to be recognised and celebrated so enjoy the moment, raise a glass and congratulate your teammates and especially yourself for a job well done.

Together, we’ve made a change

We have reached the $1,000 mark of funds raised through the Containers for Change initiative! This would not be possible without the help of our generous supporters who have chosen to support childhood cancer research while helping to protect the environment.

Containers for Change is a recycling scheme that lets you cash in eligible containers for 10 cents each. The mission of this scheme is to increase recycling and reduce the number of drink containers that litters our environment.

Let’s see how much more we can raise! To help raise funds for CLCRF through Containers for Change, all you need to do is go to your nearest Containers for Change refund point and quote our Scheme ID when returning your containers.

Our Scheme ID is C10285275

Mandurah over 55 Kayak Club Donations to CLCRF

For 23 years, the Mandurah over 55 Kayak Club has held various functions to raise money for the Children’s Leukaemia and Cancer Research Foundation. This was initiated by two of the Kayak Club members who are the parents of Tracey, a child who died of a rare bone cancer.

The first Charity Paddle in support of CLCRF was held on the Murray River from Sandy Cove to Pinjarra and return, spanning approximately 42 kms. These paddles are now annual events still held on the Murray River at Murray Bend where members are charged $10 to paddle various distances, including a 30km return paddle to Pinjarra.

There is also a raffle for members, both active and retired, with proceeds added to the final donation tally to CLCRF. The morning ends with a BBQ provided by the Kayak Club. All paddles on this day are dedicated to raising funds for the Foundation.

Donations also come from a Book Club and a Craft Club who have Kayak club members participating in them, as well as a Morning Tea arranged by one of the members, and some other raffles along the way.

Sadly, due to COVID restrictions, the Mandurah over 55 Kayak Club Charity Paddle has not been able to go ahead the last 2 years. However, the club was still able to donate $2,000 this year from the various donations and funds left over from last year.

We are so grateful for the ongoing support of the Mandurah over 55s Kayak Club. During these uncertain times, we admire the Club’s generosity and we look forward to many more years of their support.

Thank you for the past 40 days!

Our 40Kin40days campaign has come to an end. This initiative was created to commemorate the Foundation’s inception by spreading kindness in the community. We believe we did just that, thanks to your help!

A big thank you to every single person who decided to choose kindness during the past 40 days by donating to CLCRF. You have all helped us in our commitment to ensure we can continue funding the ground-breaking research to find better treatments for childhood cancers.

Our 40Kin40days would not have been possible without the incredible support of Springfree Trampoline. Springfree Trampoline not only helped us share our message of kindness to a wider audience, but they even generously donated a trampoline for us to give away to one of our lucky supporters.

The very lucky winner of the Springfree Jumbo Round Trampoline has been contacted by the Foundation. So, if you entered to win, be sure to check your email because it might just be you!

40Kin40days may be over, but that doesn’t mean you can’t continue spreading kindness. As we continue navigating through these unprecedented times, it’s time for our researchers to continue their important work, so that more children can live the long and fulfilling lives they deserve.

Make a donation towards childhood cancer research today.

CLCRF wins two more Local Matters!

Thanks to the help of the generous Perth community, CLCRF has won not one, but two, more Grill’d Local Matters campaigns! The Foundation was selected to participate in the Local Matters program at Grill’d Scarborough in April and at Grill’d Shafto Lane in May.

At these two restaurants, CLCRF went up against two other organisations to receive the most tokens by the end of the month. As the organisation that accumulated the most tokens, CLCRF has received a $300 donation from both venues – that’s a total of $600 towards childhood cancer research!

Tokens are given out to customers with every burger purchase, so we would like to thank every single customer who used their token to support the Foundation. Your consideration will help scientists find more effective treatments for childhood cancer.

We also thank Grill’d for selecting us to participate in this wonderful initiative that gives back to the community. We hope to be able to participate again in the future!

Grill’d is all about fresh and healthy burgers. Whether you’re a vegetarian, vegan, gluten free or all in, there is sure to be something for you on their delicious menu! Visit the wonderful team at Grill’d Scarborough or Grill’d Shafto Lane, or find another store near you.

$6557 raised at the Perth Tradie Expo!

This year’s Perth Tradie Expo, supported by Toolmart, took place over the weekend of Friday 18 to Sunday 20 of June at Ascot Racecourse. The always-exciting event provides a once-a-year opportunity for tradies and DIY enthusiasts to purchase tools and equipment at bargain prices.

We are grateful to have been invited back to the Expo this year to collect gold coin donations on entry alongside the Desperate for Love Dog Pound Rescue.

A total of $6557 was raised for childhood cancer research over the weekend. This incredible result would not have been possible without our amazing volunteers who braved the cold weather to collect these funds.

A big thank you to Emma, Shane, Eric, Cornelia, Barry, Sue, Maddy, Nehan Rebecca, Sarah, Alecia, Pia, Gordon, Calum, Mara, Emily G, Garry P, Mike, Alex, Emily, Gary K, Anthony, Wendy, Jody, Lavanya, Sophie, and Andrea.

We would also like to thank every single person who attended the Expo and decided to put their gold coin donation in our tins! Your contribution will go a long way to help future generations of children live cancer-free.

Finally, we thank Toolmart for inviting us back to the Expo again this year. This is always such an exciting weekend for our volunteers and staff, and we are so grateful for the great opportunity to raise funds and awareness for childhood cancer research.

A Record-Breaking Quiz Night!

On Saturday 12 June, the Foundation held its annual Keep the Flame Alive Quiz Night at Lathlain Function Centre at Perth Football Club. This event was once again a sell-out, with every table full thanks to our wonderful supporters and quiz-enthusiasts.

What’s even better than a sold-out event? A record-breaking one! Our Quiz Night broke a fundraising record for the Foundation, raising a total of $20,659 for childhood cancer research in one night!

We are over the moon with his incredible result. Without the support of small businesses across Western Australia donating what they can to the cause, we would not be able to break our fundraising total year in and year out.

Congratulations to table 18 who took the win at this year’s Quiz Night. We had some very clever minds in the room on the night, including researchers from Telethon Kids Institute, so this is a great achievement.

The Quiz Night was once again MC’d by fan-favourite Sean Fry. He kept the audience entertained all night long and it was no wonder people asked us to invite him back this year!

A big thank you to our amazing volunteers who worked tirelessly to ensure the Quiz Night would be as successful as possible. We would especially like to acknowledge Michele, Jonelle, and Kristy, who ran around collecting the wonderful donations, made them up into beautiful hampers and made sure everything ran smoothly on the night.

We would also like to thank Kathy, Chris, Gary, Keeley and Kholee, who donated their time to help on the night. This event is undoubtedly a team effort, and we couldn’t be prouder for what we have achieved together this year. “It was such an outstanding effort by the whole team,” said CEO Andrea Alexander.

For a fifth year, we thank Perth Football Club who kindly donated the Lathlain Function Centre for the Quiz Night. With a spacious hall, a large bar, and a separate room for our silent auction, we could not imagine a better venue for this event.

Lastly, we must thank every single person who came to the Quiz Night on Saturday. “We are once again so appreciative for the amazing generosity of our supporters which lead to this amazing result,” expressed Andrea. “These funds will go a long way to help fund the vital research into childhood cancers.”

Here are the businesses who kindly helped us out this year:
