Run for Childhood Cancer Research

Registrations are now open for the 2020 HBF Run for a Reason! This year, Western Australia’s most well-loved community event will take place on Sunday, May 24.

You can help us raise important funds for childhood cancer research by choosing the Foundation as your reason to participate in either the Commonwealth Bank 4k, the Kleenheat 12k or the Brooks Half Marathon.

As the Foundation does not receive State or Federal funding, we rely on the generous support of the community at these wonderful events to help us ensure the ground-breaking research into childhood cancer can continue so that future generations can live cancer free.

The event is not only a great way to support an important cause, but it will also allow you to get active and have a good time with your family and friends. Not a runner? Don’t sweat it! You are free to run, walk, jog or roll your way to the finish line!

The Commonwealth Bank 4km course is the perfect non-competitive course for those looking to have a fun day out with their family and friends. The 4km course takes you on a scenic tour of Perth as you make your way along the Swan River. It’s also loaded with fun surprises and entertainment!

The Kleenheat 12km course is a great choice for those who are looking for more of a running challenge or need a longer walk to chat to their friends. If you are a seasoned runner or attempting your longest run yet, the Brooks Half Marathon promises to get those legs pumping with a flat, fast course.

Making a difference on their special day

Earlier this year, good friends of the Foundation, Nicole Carey and Gary Ronayne, got married in the beautiful town of Athlone, Ireland. On the biggest day of their lives, they decided to help make a difference in the lives of children facing a cancer diagnosis.

In lieu of wedding favours, Nicole and Gary chose to make a donation towards childhood cancer research at CLCRF on behalf of each guest. A total of $300 was donated towards the Foundation thanks to the couple’s generous incentive.

“Thank you for being part of our special day,” read the wedding favour cards that greeted guests on their table. “We have made a donation in your honour to The Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer Research Foundation. We feel the best gift we can give is the gift of helping others.”

The couple are great friends of the Foundation and long-time supporters of the cause. Gary is involved with the Morley Gaels Gaelic Football Association who have been supporting CLCRF for many years, having donated nearly $10,000 to the Foundation. The club also proudly wears the CLCRF logo on their shirts.

With Nicole originally from Belfast in Northern Ireland and Gary from Cork in Ireland, they decided to marry in the middle –  Athlone, a beautiful town on the River Shannon.

We would like to thank Nicole and Gary for their generosity and for thinking of the Foundation on such a special and momentous occasion in their lives.

Donating in lieu of wedding favours is a growing trend that speaks to the desire to make a difference in the world. By helping to raise funds for important research into childhood cancer, we couldn’t think of a more meaningful way to thank guests for their presence.

Give back this holiday season through the Paypal Giving Fund

On December 3, PayPal announced their exciting new #GivingTuesday campaign, giving all not-for-profit organisations and charities the chance to receive extra funds throughout the holiday season!

Donors simply need to make a donation through the PayPal Giving Fund and PayPal will match 10% of that donation for the chosen charity.

That means, if you make a $100 donation to CLCRF, the Foundation will actually receive $110! This is a wonderful way for our supporters to help us raise extra funds for childhood cancer research during the season of giving.

The PayPal Giving fund allows for secure online donations with no fees for organisations or individual donors, meaning you can rest assured that 100% of the funds will be distributed directly to the Foundation.

Donations will be matched on a first come, first served basis until December 31 or until a $50,000 donation cap has been reached. So be sure to make the most of this generous offer while it lasts and help support childhood cancer research.

Boar Swamp Campdraft Raises over $7000 for Childhood Cancer Research!

The Boar Swamp Campdraft took place last month, from November 22 to November 24. The popular event was held at the McLarty family’s Blythewood farm near Pinjarra, with funds raised going towards CLCRF.

Campdrafting is a uniquely Australian sport that dates back to the late 1800s and involves a horse and a rider working cattle for the coveted title of the best stockhorse and rider.

The Boar Swamp Campdraft Club have been supporting the Foundation for a number of years now and we couldn’t be more grateful for their wonderful efforts!

This year, not only did the club pledge $3500 for the Foundation, but campdrafter Jacob Walmsley also kindly offered his face to raise extra funds. Thanks to the wonderful generosity of the crowd, Jacob was able to raise an additional $4349.35 and is now sporting a bad mullet, no eyebrows, half a beard and a bald crown.

That’s an incredible total of $7,849.35 going towards childhood cancer research!

We would like to congratulate the organisers on another successful campdraft event, as well as all of the competitors and winners. We sincerely appreciate the Boar Swamp Campdraft Club’s ongoing support and contribution to our cause. We look forward to continuing this relationship well into the future!

Decorate your Christmas Tree with a Donation Bauble!

Not sure what to get your loved ones for Christmas? Or maybe you want to do something a little more meaningful this year? Simply make a donation to CLCRF during Christmas-time and we will send you a special little bauble to give as a gift or hang on your tree!

All you need to do is make a donation online and mention in the comments that you would like to turn your donation into a bauble. We will then send it to you along with your receipt – it really is that easy!

This idea comes from last year’s Christmas Appeal with Karalee on Preston where we took the humble Christmas ornament to the next level in a unique incentive for patrons to donate. Visitors to Karalee on Preston had the opportunity to purchase a bauble over the bar for any donation amount they chose and place it on the pub’s beautiful tree.

We are so excited to announce that we will be collaborating with Karalee on Preston again this year, with their Christmas tree set to go up this week! So head on down to the award-winning pub, try their delicious food, grab yourself a drink and help decorate their Christmas tree with a donation!

At CLCRF, our goal is to continue to raise funds for childhood cancer research in order to find more effective treatments for young children so they can enjoy a better quality of life and be reunited with their families sooner. By helping to fund this important research, a CLCRF bauble makes for a truly special Christmas gift.

Kerrin to Shave her Head for Childhood Cancer Research!

In an effort to raise money for the important research into childhood cancer, the amazing Kerrin Hampson is shaving her head… again! Kerrin announced the news at the CLCRF Family Night Out which took place on Saturday, November 9.

Kerrin is no stranger to getting rid of her locks to raise funds for childhood cancer. In 2013, she shaved her head for the first time after her son Marley finished his treatment for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. Then again in November 2017 she got rid of around 30cm of hair to support Finlay Higgs, who was diagnosed with Hepatoblastoma, a rare liver cancer.

Even after Marley finished his treatment, Kerrin and her family have remained involved in raising awareness and funds for research into childhood cancer, with the hope that one day a cure will be found.

We would like to thank Kerrin for her ongoing support of the Foundation and we hope to see her smash her fundraising goal of $1000, with the help of our generous supporters!

If you would like to support Kerrin and the very worthwhile cause, simply make a donation through her Facebook fundraiser page.

Nambung Country Music Muster raises money for CLCRF

The Nambung Country Music Muster returned for its 4th year from October 24 to 27 at Nambung Station, just 200kms north of Perth and nestled alongside the state’s world famous Pinnacles.

The 4-day camping event has quickly grown as a favourite amongst the country music lovers from all around Australia. Not only do attendees get to enjoy music, poetry, dancing and a great country atmosphere, but they also get the pleasure of knowing they are helping to support important causes.

The Nambung Country Music Muster supports local groups, with a large proportion of proceeds going towards several different charities. This year, the festival was able to raise $2,000 for the Foundation, which will go towards the vital research into childhood cancer.

We would like to thank the Nambung Country Music Muster for their kind donation and for continuing to support CLCRF. We wish them nothing but success for next year’s event!

The Gift of Giving through Everyday Hero

For many of us, it can be a real struggle not just to decide what we want for our birthday, but what we actually need. Why not use the occasion as an opportunity to do something more meaningful? This is exactly what Natalie and Andy Lukas have done by asking their family and friends to give the gift of giving.

With his 40th birthday coming up, Andy communicated to his wife Natalie that he wanted to do something that involved giving, rather than receiving. “He suggested cooking a big BBQ for the homeless but I thought something that provided for more than a day’s help was possibly more satisfying,” said Natalie.

Natalie decided to set up a surprise Everyday Hero page for her husband in support of CLCRF. The choice to support CLCRF stemmed from their own personal reasons. “Andy and I had a scare with our second child, Charlie, earlier this year when he suddenly developed a blood disorder,” explained Natalie.

“We were so grateful to find out he was not in fact diagnosed with leukaemia as we had anticipated from the initial results. This inspired me to help support and raise awareness of the work of Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer Research Foundation.”

Natalie and Andy are aware of the suffering that those battling blood cancers have to endure after Andy’s mum was diagnosed with a haematological cancer 2 years ago.

“It’s incredibly sad that anyone suffers a haematological cancer… but more tragic for this to happen to a child and result in loss of such young lives.”

Andy was presented with his Everyday Hero page on Saturday, October 19 after an incredible total of $2550.57 had been raised for the Foundation by his generous friends and family.

“My husband loved his webpage and looks forward to trying to build up the donation bank himself!”

We would like to thank both Natalie and Andy for choosing to support the Foundation through this wonderful gift idea! Do you have a birthday coming up or want to do something a little more meaningful this Christmas? It’s easy to create your own fundraising page through Everyday Hero. Simply follow the steps below.

How to create a fundraising page:

  1. Create a fundraising page and select CLCRF as your charity.
  2. Personalise your page with a photo and tell everyone why you’re supporting CLCRF.
  3. Share your unique supporter page link with your friends, family, and colleagues through social media.

Raising Funds Through Marathon Match

The Foundation was recently thrilled to receive a donation of $1,090 from the wonderful students and teachers at Lynwood Senior High School.

The funds were raised through a marathon soccer match which saw a total of 45 students and a few crazy teachers playing indoor soccer for a duration of 24-hours. The players were separated into two teams, Blue and Green, and played in two-hour shifts while the Soccer Committee Parents cooked dinner and breakfast for everyone.

The goal of the match was to raise money for the Soccer Academy and CLCRF. Over $6,000 was raised in total, a remarkable feat that matched the efforts on the court.
