CLCRF’s 28th Annual General Meeting

On Wednesday 8 December, Our Foundation held its 28th Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club in Peppermint Grove. It was a balmy evening with stunning views where we caught up with some long-time supporters and new friends.

Chairman Geoff Cattach gave his reports on CLCRF’s operations during the 2020/2021 financial year, alongside Secretary and Chief Executive Officer Andrea Alexander.

It was mentioned that since the very first dollar was donated to CLCRF, over $35.9M has been raised for childhood cancer research. That is something this Foundation and those associated with its legacy feel very proud achieving.

The AGM was followed by our annual Christmas celebration, where members and guests enjoyed delicious canapés and drinks overlooking the river.

We thank those who joined us at the AGM and Christmas celebration. Our members are critical to the ongoing success of our Foundation. As a member, you can not only take pleasure in knowing you are helping to raise funds for childhood cancer research, but you will also be invited to participate in our exciting events each year.

South West Bike Trek 2021

Our annual South West Bike Trek is over for another year, with riders finishing their 6-day and 600 kilometre journey on 16 October. This year, the bike trek also went virtual for the first time ever, with supporters riding at their own place, in their own time.

This year, the bike trek saw 21 live riders and a handful of virtual riders raise a total of $43,392! We thank everyone who participated to help us reach this incredible result.

Riders of the live event travelled through the beautiful South West region, passing Fairbridge, Preston, Harvey, Bunbury, Busselton, Margaret River and Augusta. This event was once again organised by loyal CLCRF supporter Eric Maddock, with the help of his wife Annette.

“It’s over for another year and I think it all went well,” said Eric. “We met up with lots of good friends made over quite a few years. And once again, we’ve enjoyed raising awareness and funds for this great cause to help so many sick kids.”

The live riders experienced dreadful weather at the start of their journey, but they were not deterred. “On our second day, we had a shocker,” explained Eric. “Nobody was feeling great. But then I read a post from CLCRF about a poor little 8-year-old who lost his fight against leukaemia, and I remembered why we do this ride every year. We sat and cried.”

As always, there are many people and businesses that need to be thanked for helping our riders out along the way. A huge thank you to the following:

  • Binningup Seniors Club
  • Café Mooba
  • Jarra Infusion
  • The Beach Shak Café
  • Mr Barker Chicken
  • Coles Warnbro
  • IGA Shoalwater
  • Woolworths Greenfields
  • Smart Diet Solutions
  • Harvey Professional & Business Women
  • Scope Engineering
  • Swings and Roundabouts
  • Bunbury Toyota
  • Cornelia Ewald
  • Falcon Lions
  • Pinjarra Rotary
  • Waroona Lions
  • Harvey Rotary
  • Harvey Council
  • Harvey Primary School
  • South Bunbury Rotary
  • Eaton Scout Camp
  • Boyanup Lions
  • Busselton Rotary
  • Jurrian and Wendy at Camp Grace
  • Cowarramup Lions
  • Margaret River Rotary
  • Leeuwin Lions

“Without the help we get from all of these people, we could not do this,” expressed Eric. “So I must extend a huge thanks to each and every one of them and also to Annette Maddock and all the riders over the past 20 years; thank you guys and ladies for a great job.”

We thank Eric for his dedication and support. Year after year, Eric has led a safe and successful event, all for the love of the cause.  “My hope is we will continue towards a goal of zero deaths from this terrible illness,” Eric expressed.

We look forward to another successful event in 2022.

$6557 raised at the Perth Tradie Expo!

This year’s Perth Tradie Expo, supported by Toolmart, took place over the weekend of Friday 18 to Sunday 20 of June at Ascot Racecourse. The always-exciting event provides a once-a-year opportunity for tradies and DIY enthusiasts to purchase tools and equipment at bargain prices.

We are grateful to have been invited back to the Expo this year to collect gold coin donations on entry alongside the Desperate for Love Dog Pound Rescue.

A total of $6557 was raised for childhood cancer research over the weekend. This incredible result would not have been possible without our amazing volunteers who braved the cold weather to collect these funds.

A big thank you to Emma, Shane, Eric, Cornelia, Barry, Sue, Maddy, Nehan Rebecca, Sarah, Alecia, Pia, Gordon, Calum, Mara, Emily G, Garry P, Mike, Alex, Emily, Gary K, Anthony, Wendy, Jody, Lavanya, Sophie, and Andrea.

We would also like to thank every single person who attended the Expo and decided to put their gold coin donation in our tins! Your contribution will go a long way to help future generations of children live cancer-free.

Finally, we thank Toolmart for inviting us back to the Expo again this year. This is always such an exciting weekend for our volunteers and staff, and we are so grateful for the great opportunity to raise funds and awareness for childhood cancer research.

A Record-Breaking Quiz Night!

On Saturday 12 June, the Foundation held its annual Keep the Flame Alive Quiz Night at Lathlain Function Centre at Perth Football Club. This event was once again a sell-out, with every table full thanks to our wonderful supporters and quiz-enthusiasts.

What’s even better than a sold-out event? A record-breaking one! Our Quiz Night broke a fundraising record for the Foundation, raising a total of $20,659 for childhood cancer research in one night!

We are over the moon with his incredible result. Without the support of small businesses across Western Australia donating what they can to the cause, we would not be able to break our fundraising total year in and year out.

Congratulations to table 18 who took the win at this year’s Quiz Night. We had some very clever minds in the room on the night, including researchers from Telethon Kids Institute, so this is a great achievement.

The Quiz Night was once again MC’d by fan-favourite Sean Fry. He kept the audience entertained all night long and it was no wonder people asked us to invite him back this year!

A big thank you to our amazing volunteers who worked tirelessly to ensure the Quiz Night would be as successful as possible. We would especially like to acknowledge Michele, Jonelle, and Kristy, who ran around collecting the wonderful donations, made them up into beautiful hampers and made sure everything ran smoothly on the night.

We would also like to thank Kathy, Chris, Gary, Keeley and Kholee, who donated their time to help on the night. This event is undoubtedly a team effort, and we couldn’t be prouder for what we have achieved together this year. “It was such an outstanding effort by the whole team,” said CEO Andrea Alexander.

For a fifth year, we thank Perth Football Club who kindly donated the Lathlain Function Centre for the Quiz Night. With a spacious hall, a large bar, and a separate room for our silent auction, we could not imagine a better venue for this event.

Lastly, we must thank every single person who came to the Quiz Night on Saturday. “We are once again so appreciative for the amazing generosity of our supporters which lead to this amazing result,” expressed Andrea. “These funds will go a long way to help fund the vital research into childhood cancers.”

Here are the businesses who kindly helped us out this year:

CLCRF’s 40th Anniversary Celebration

2020 is a milestone year for CLCRF, as it marks our 40th Anniversary of raising funds and awareness for childhood cancer research. With the COVID-19 pandemic, and all of the restrictions that have come with it, we were not sure if we were going to be able to celebrate this incredible accomplishment this year.

After having to scrap our plans for a celebration earlier in the year, we made the decision to merge our 40th Anniversary Celebration with our Annual General Meeting (AGM), after restrictions were eased and the Department of Health allowed it. Both events were held at Ambrose Estate at the scenic Wembley Golf Course on Monday, December 7.

From October 11 to 17, the 18th annual South West Bike Trek took place, organised once again by long-time CLCRF supporter Eric Maddock. The event saw 15 enthusiastic riders embarking on the 600km journey from Perth to Augusta to raise funds for childhood cancer research.

We are so thrilled to announce that over $35,000 was raised for the Foundation this year! This is an incredible achievement, considering the disruption of the COVID-19 pandemic and the reduced peloton of 15.
