A Symphony of Love

Here’s a flashback to the past: this article was published on Monday 24 May 1999 in The West Australian when Georgia Lowry, was only 5 years of age!

Georgia was diagnosed with a rare and very aggressive form of leukaemia at just eight weeks old. Miraculously, Georgia is still with us at 22 years of age today and is a wonderful ambassador for CLCRF.

She’s photographed here laughing on top of a double bass with the German 66-piece Bosch Orchestra’s conductor, Ulrich Walddorfer. The concert was held on 24 May 1999 at the Perth Concert Hall to raise funds for Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer Research Foundation Inc. (CLCRF) and tickets went for a reasonable $15.

“I loved this photo shoot – I remember Georgia had everyone laughing,” said Andrea Alexander, Executive Officer of CLCRF, who was present at the photoshoot in 1999.

Since that time, Georgia Lowry, who is now 22, has gone from strength to strength as a CLCRF ambassador. She continues to passionately raise awareness of the need for greater funding for child cancer research.

It’s inspiring to remember the wonderful efforts of organisations like Bosch Orchestra to raise awareness and money for child cancer research!

Garry Running in the New York Marathon for the CLCRF

Garry Preston is running to raise money for Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer Research Foundation Inc. (CLCRF) in this year’s New York City Marathon on 5 November.

He’s been training since March and won a place in this year’s New York Marathon (only a third of applicants are successful). Garry resolved to never take part in a major marathon after he took part in the London Marathon 13 years ago. In spite of that, he’s committed to running in the New York Marathon this year.

“I have quickly realised my legs aren’t as young as they used to be and that the only way I’ll get through it this time is through a great deal of hard work, dedication and mental toughness. Your financial backing in the form of sponsorship will ensure I have a strong breeze pushing me along the way… or a chain around my ankle dragging me on!”

As to why he is raising money for CLCRF, Garry says, “I couldn’t possibly do justice in trying to explain the great work this amazing charity is doing in helping children and families.”

“I realise you may also be thinking that it would have been a lot easier to have entered the City to Surf Marathon here in Perth however, it would have been even easier for me to change my mind … having booked and paid for my flights and accommodation in New York there is simply no going back!” Garry explains.

Socks for Childhood Cancer Research!

Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer Research Foundation (Inc.) (CLCRF) are proud to announce a partnership with new Perth business, Toe the Line. On 7 September, Toe the Line, launched and introduced an exciting new range of cotton-combed socks at The Old Laundry. Zoe Manuel, Miss Teen Continents Australia National finalist and one of CLCRF’s ambassadors, proudly modelled Toe the Line socks.

The very first pair of Toe the Line socks were auctioned off at an amazing $1,500 at the launch, and all proceeds went to the CLCRF. Don’t worry, that was just the first pair – the socks are priced at $14.95 each and can be purchased online!

Toe the Line was formed when two men, Jack and Yean, came together with an idea to create the New Standard in exciting sock wear made of soft combed cotton. Jack and Yean learned that children’s feet become very cold when undergoing chemotherapy to treat cancer. As conventional wool and synthetic socks can irritate the skin, combed cotton is the best alternative. Toe the Line will be making socks in children’s sizes so that they can help keep feet warm and bring a smile to children fighting cancer!

It was a wonderful night and CLCRF wish Jack, Yean and Toe the Line much success for the future. We also wish to thank them for their generous contribution to child cancer research. Buy yourself some amazing and comfortable new socks from Toe the Line!

Harrison’s Story

Andrew and Emma Williams are a brave couple from Mandurah who have battled childhood cancer. Their four-year-old son, Harrison, developed neuroblastoma two years ago. They came close to financial ruin after losing their life savings and were forced to close their two butcher shops in the battle to save Harrison’s life.

Now Harrison is cancer-free and the couple are rebuilding their lives, working together at ‘The Butcher and his Wife’ in the new Mandurah Forum.

“For the last two years it’s been absolutely horrendous but we’ve come out of it really good now,” Emma said.

“Harrison was diagnosed in February 2015 with neuroblastoma and he had a year of pretty intense treatment, lots of surgeries, lots of chemotherapy.”

“Andrew worked different places over the last couple of years, but I must admit it’s been hard and the focus was on Harrison, it wasn’t on anything else.”

Andrew and Emma are dedicated to helping fund childhood cancer research and are raising funds for Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer Research (Inc.) (CLCRF). Their store, ‘The Butcher and his Wife’ has been raising money for CLCRF by selling packets of sunflower seeds and yellow ribbons through the Sowing the Seeds for Child Cancer Research fundraiser to raise awareness for Childhood Cancer in September.

“We’re going to promote childhood cancer awareness month, which is all of September, and I just want everyone to know that we will be selling ‘seeds of hope’ for $5 and we’re selling gold ribbons for a dollar,” explained Emma.

A Piece of Cake! Cake decorating seminar raises funds for CLCRF

On 17 August 2017, the Cake Decorators Association of WA organised the 19th National Cake Decorating Seminar that was held at Rendezvous Hotel Perth Scarborough. Antonio Argentieri from Italy, a well-known cake decorator and Foundation Friend, sought support from the organisers to raise funds for Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer Research Foundation (Inc.) (CLCRF) via this event.

Gold coin donations for entry went towards the CLCRF and $426.10 was raised by the Cake Decorators Association with the help of Antonio. The cakes on display were absolutely stunning in artistry and detail. Congratulations to the winners and competitors of the cake competition who made jaws drop with their amazingly detailed designs!

CLCRF want to thank Antonio Argentieri and the Cake Decorators Association of WA for their generous efforts and passion for funding child cancer research!

Climb for a Smile cancelled

Whilst we didn’t organise this event it is with deep sadness to hear that Rotary WA’s Climb for a Smile has been cancelled.

Due to lower than forecast registrations, event organisers have cancelled the event.

Climb for a Smile was to see participants climb 50 floors (that’s 1,042 steps) of Brookfield’s 108 St George’s Terrace on Sunday 10 September to help raise vital funds for charities: The Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer Research Foundation (Inc.), Interplast and End Polio Now.

Organisers, the Rotary Club of Crawley, will be issuing refunds to everyone who registered to participate via the MyCause registration system.

“We would like to thank everyone who has pledged their support for this event and apologise for any inconvenience that they may experience as a result of the event being cancelled”, said Jaap Poll, President of Rotary Crawley.

“However, due to the lower than expected registration rate the event has been cancelled for financial reasons.

We also want to apologise to the charities who were to benefit from the proceeds raised at this event. As Rotarians we remain committed to serving the community and encourage the people of Perth to provide their continued support for The Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer Research Foundation (Inc.), Interplast and End Polio Now.”

Climb for a Smile to Support Children with Cancer!

Climb for a Smile with hundreds of people on Sunday 10 September! Participants will walk or run up 50 floors (that’s 1,042 steps) of Brookfield’s 108 St George’s Terrace to raise funds for children’s charities including Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer Research Foundation (Inc.).

Hosted by Rotary WA, Climb for a Smile kicks off from 7:30am on Sunday 10 September. Corporate professionals through to school students will be walking or running up 50 floors to raise money for the charities. The climb will only take 10 minutes up to one hour depending on your fitness level. Register now!

One of the climbers on the day will be Mark Daniels, a 24-year-old Through Knee Amputee currently serving in the Royal Australian Navy, who will be going up the stairs with a prosthetic leg. After a near fatal motorbike crash in December 2015 where he lost his leg, Mark now dedicates himself to keeping fit and motivating others by using his story to inspire and educate. Mark explains why he wants to participate.

“These kids are facing something that most of us couldn’t even comprehend as adults let alone as a child. I want to show them that their disabilities don’t limit their abilities at all, when life throws you a curve ball you’ve got to hit back as hard as you can. They’ve been given the short straw and it’s going to be a huge journey but as long as they keep pushing, then they will reach the top.”

Sowing the Seeds for Childhood Cancer Awareness

Spring is nearly here and September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

The Children’s Leukaemia and Cancer Research Foundation (Inc.) is raising awareness for childhood cancer by selling sachets of Sunflower Seeds. Each sachet contains 45 seeds and comes with a Gold Awareness Ribbon. Order your sachets of seeds for $5 each now!

Throughout September, you can help CLCRF raise awareness for this disease, that affects roughly 600 children around Australia each year, by purchasing sachets of seeds. You may even want to purchase sachets to sell to your family, friends, schools or clubs.

Sunflowers are easy to grow. Simply bury the seeds 30cm apart and 5mm deep in a sunny but sheltered position and keep moist. Beautiful golden Sunflowers will bloom skywards and grow to a height of up to four metres (average about 1.8M).
