Happy Birthday Geoff!
Geoff became actively involved in fundraising for research into childhood cancers after two of his sons were struck by the terrible disease. His son Brent was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia just shy of his third birthday and his other son Stewart was diagnosed with a brain tumour at just 13 years old.
After feeling helpless watching his two sons battling cancer, Geoff joined forces with Peter Harper at CLCRF and took fundraising to a whole new level. Geoff was appointed Chairman in 1982 and within two years, he helped to raise $100,000 and recruited renowned cancer research Professor Ursula Kees.
Geoff has always been dedicated to serving the community, as demonstrated through rewards and accolades. In 2009 Geoff was made a member of the General Division for the Order of Australia, in 2014 he was a finalist for the WA Senior Australian of the Year and in 2018 AMP honoured him with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Some incredible achievements!
It’s without a doubt that the Foundation would not be where it is today without the amazing leadership and dedication of Geoff.
Thank you, Geoff! We wish you nothing but joy in your milestone year and may you enjoy many more beautiful days ahead of you.

The Children’s Leukaemia and Cancer Research Foundation’s annual family night out is at Gloucester Park on Saturday, November 9, with Perth Symphony Orchestra perform- ing family favourites. Tickets are $45, children free, and proceeds support research into childhood cancers. Take a picnic or enjoy take-aways from food trucks. Gates open at 4.30pm and the musical fun starts at 5.30pm.
Saving at the Show with CLCRF
We were recently delighted to offer some of our supporters a wonderful opportunity at this year’s Perth Royal Show, thanks to Lotterywest and the Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia.
Deserving families were invited to the Lotterywest Animal Nursery experience with Farmer Nigel which included free tickets to the show, conveniently located parking, food vouchers and complimentary showbags.
It is no secret that the Perth Royal show can put a big dent in the family budget, so we are grateful we were able to relieve some financial pressure and offer an incredible experience to children who may not have had the chance to attend otherwise.
“We could never have afforded to go to the Royal Show without you,” said Chrissy Roberts, who attended the experience with her daughter and four grandchildren. “We worked out with four food vouchers, $20 parking, three free show bags from the Animal Nursery, and the entry costs for the six of us, we have saved $200 and we are so very grateful.”
We greatly appreciate this opportunity afforded to us by Lotterywest and the Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia. It is wonderful to see these organisations demonstrating social responsibility and supporting the wider community.
The Foundation looks forward to continuing a relationship with these organisations and we hope to be able to provide similar opportunities to our supporters in the future.

Riders to tackle trek

More than 20 cyclists from Perth and the South West will hit the road on Sunday for a week-long ride to raise money for children’s cancer research.
The South West Bike Trek will see 24 riders start in Subiaco and journey through the South West in the hope of raising $40,000 for the Children’s Leukaemia and Cancer Research Foundation.
Along the way riders will stop off at Fairbridge, Preston, Harvey, Eaton, Busselton and Margaret River.
Bunbury cyclists Ken Pritchard and Doreen Dow will be participating for their second and sixth year respectively, and will cover a gruelling 600km.
Neither have a tie to the cause and simply signed up for the challenge of the ride, but Mr Pritchard said it was not long until he found himself wanting to do more to raise money for the cause.
“I originally did the ride for the challenge but then got caught up in the fundraising of the ride and I’ve done other things here and there with the foundation now,” he said.
“The friendships and the way the group bonds is amazing… by the third day you’re one big family.”
On Tuesday riders will visit Shire of Harvey offices for an afternoon tea and have dinner at the Rotary Club of Harvey.
On Wednesday the riders will take students from Harvey Primary School for a spin before attending dinner at the South Bunbury Rotary Club.

Raising Funds Through Marathon Match
The Foundation was recently thrilled to receive a donation of $1,090 from the wonderful students and teachers at Lynwood Senior High School.
The funds were raised through a marathon soccer match which saw a total of 45 students and a few crazy teachers playing indoor soccer for a duration of 24-hours. The players were separated into two teams, Blue and Green, and played in two-hour shifts while the Soccer Committee Parents cooked dinner and breakfast for everyone.
The goal of the match was to raise money for the Soccer Academy and CLCRF. Over $6,000 was raised in total, a remarkable feat that matched the efforts on the court.
Age is no Barrier for Paula Prynne
Paula Prynne, great-grandmother from South Yunderup, will prove that age is no barrier while raising money for CLCRF at this year’s South West Bike Trek.
The 80-year old will ride an incredible 600 kilometres over six days, starting in Subiaco on October 13 and ending in Augusta. Paula and her fellow cyclists will stop in the wonderful towns of Fairbridge, Preston, Harvey, Eaton, Busselton and Margaret River.
This will be the longest ride to date for the Mandurah Over 55 Cycling Club member and, despite her only been cycling for two years, Paula holds little nerves thanks to her training.
“I’ve been training quite thoroughly for this, riding roughly 250kms per week, and I’ll be riding with a group so it’s completely safe,” said Paula. “It’s not compulsory for participants to finish the ride but I’m quite confident I can get it done.”
Paula completed her first cycling event in the Great Ocean Ride last year and she plans to make raising money through cycling an annual tradition.
“I find cycling gives me something to look forward to and I honestly just love it,” Paula explained. “And if I can take the thing I love doing and use it to raise money to help these kids that might be going through hell, then that’s all the better.”
We praise Paula for not letting her age be a barrier and we wish her the best of luck for the South West Bike Trek, which will take place from October 13 to 19.
The South West Bike Trek aims to raise funds for important research into childhood cancer research and this year the target to reach is $50,000. Support CLCRF at The Color Run Perth!
Looking for a fun, healthy and uncompetitive way to support CLCRF and raise funds for childhood cancer research? Then The Color Run Perth 2019, taking place at Claremont Showground on Sunday 20 October, sounds like the perfect event for you!
The Color Run, also known as the happiest 5K on the Planet, is a five-kilometre, untimed event that celebrates healthiness, happiness and individuality. Runners are asked to wear white and are doused from head to toe in a different coloured powder at each kilometre mark.
At the completion of the run, the colourful participants can enjoy the Finish Festival, a party equipped with music, dancing, photo opportunities and activities.
Since The Color Run has no winners or official times, it is an event that caters to everyone from first time runners to seasoned athletes. To date, the event has donated more than $5 million to charity.

Summer is coming! Except for the killer magpies, it’s the exact opposite feeling to the ‘Winter Is Coming’ refrain from Game Of Thrones, Perth is warming up and we’re coming back to life after a winter of relative hibernation. Let’s face it, one drop of rain and most Perthites will stay under the doona in front of Netflix until half way through September.
Which is what makes those first big outdoor events of the summer so very special as we all emerge bleary eyed into the sunshine and begin to live again. And, this year, on 9 November, Perth is blessed with what will be one of the biggest outdoor events of the summer, and the whole family is invited.
The Family Night Out featuring Perth Symphony Orchestra (PSO) is a fundraiser for the Children’s Leukaemia and Cancer Research Foundation. Around The Sound spoke to event coordinator, Kylie Dalton to find out more.
“This is out seventh event. The others were nice cosy events for up to 500-1,000 people, but this one we decided to see what we could do if we could get a big name and make it an event for even more people. That’s why we got Perth Symphony Orchestra.
“This is going to be our best family night out ever.
“It’s not just about the concert. We’re hoping that it’s the perfect balmy end of spring, beginning of summer weather. We’ve got the entire grassed area in the middle of Gloucester park. There will be food trucks, a bouncy castle, a cuddly animal farm, everything will be right there for people.
“We designed the setlist to be family favourites. The first set they play will be Disney favourites for the young kids. The dance area at the front of the stage will be packed with kids. After the first set the kids will settle down with Mums and dads on the blankets and people will be able to get up and have a bit of a boogie as well.”
The PSO’s song list includes all-time favourites from shows Frozen, The Lion King and The Greatest Showman and songs originally performed by Katy Perry, David Bowie and Taylor Swift. The supporting act is popular local musician JAX.
Cancer is the leading cause of death from disease in Australian children. One in 500 kids will develop cancer before they reach their 15th birthday. As CLCRF receives no government funding, it relies on community support – especially the money it can raise at events such as the Family Night Out.
Gates open at 4.30pm, with the musical acts starting at 5.30pm.

Children’s Leukaemia & Cancer Research Foundation (CLCRF) Event Organiser Kylie Dalton had a chat with Sue Myc from 89.7fm on Wednesday, 18 September about the upcoming Family Night Out.
The event, which takes place on Saturday 9 November, will be CLCRF’s seventh Family Night Out and it is set to be the biggest and best one yet! Along with delicious food trucks and a variety of fun activities for the kids to enjoy, the Perth Symphony Orchestra will be playing their family favourites at the wonderful and convenient location of Gloucester Park.
As CLCRF receives no government funding, the Foundation relies heavily on people’s generosity and attendance at these kinds of events in order to ensure the ground-breaking research into childhood cancer can continue.
“It all comes down to the local community getting behind it, buying their tickets now and supporting this event,” said Kylie.
