More about the Event

The WA Today Swan River Run presented by Westpac, is set to hit Perth for the very first time this July. Whether you want to test yourself against some of WA’s finest runners or work towards better health and fitness, this new event has something for everyone.

Held on Sunday, July 13, 2014, the Swan River Run is the sister event to the world’s largest run in Sydney, and part of The One to Run series alongside the City2Sea in Melbourne and City2South in Brisbane.

The inaugural event includes a 14km course that will start on St Georges Terrace, head around Langley Park, down Riverside Drive, then move down Mounts Bay Road / Stirling Highway before entering and running around Kings Park offering spectacular views of the city throughout. The race finishes along the Swan River on Hackett Drive.

The shorter 5km course will start on St Georges Terrace, and follow the 14km course, omitting the lap of Langley Park and Kings Park, instead travelling down Mounts Bay Road and also finishing on Hackett Drive.

Swan River Run Race Director, Rebecca Wilmer is looking forward to bringing the successful event to Perth’s shores.

“The Swan River Run is a stunning course, celebrating Perth’s picturesque views and cityscape. We’re thrilled to be launching in Perth and developing a truly national running series which has fundraising at its core” she said.

WAToday Editor-in-Chief, Allen Newton, agrees. “Perth is a fabulous city, set on the banks of the beautiful Swan River. The course for the Swan River Run showcases the scenic nature of the city, probably better than any other run in Perth, taking in King’s Park, which overlooks the city, and of course, the Swan. It is the only run to travel along Mounts Bay Road beside the river.

“It really will be a great opportunity to showcase Perth to the rest of Australia and New Zealand where Fairfax’s other runs take place. I’m looking forward to the Swan River Run growing over the coming years,” he said.

The Swan River Run will raise much-needed funds for a number of organisations including The Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation, Muscular Dystrophy WA, Cystic Fibrosis WA and Reachout.com through the Gold Charity program, which is aimed at those who want to make fundraising a focus.

For major sponsor Westpac, getting involved in the event is a chance to give back to the local community.

“Westpac has been supporting Australian communities for close to 200 years, and bringing the Swan River Run event to the people of Perth for the first time is a milestone we’re very excited about,” said Jay Watson, Westpac State General Manager, Commercial Banking, Western Australia.

“We encourage everyone to get involved in the event, and enjoy the great day out taking in some of Perth’s best sights over the 14km and 5km courses. The Swan River Run will also be a focus event for us to raise funds for our charity partner, the Westpac Lifesaver Helicopter Rescue Service of WA to continue the very important role they play in patrolling our state’s beaches,” he said.
